I Am the Light of the World
This meditation is based on a passage for March 30, 2011 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
Text: John 8:12-20
Reflection and Question: Jesus begins this conversation with His Jewish brothers by making this audacious claim: “I am the light of the world.” He is harkening back to the Creation when God’s first words were: “Let there be light.” The Pharisees who hear Jesus do not miss this connection. They try a variety of ways to challenge His firm sense that God is His Father who sent Him to be the light of life to the entire world. This exchange confirms for me that faith in Jesus does not arise from proofs but rather from spiritual sight that knows Jesus as light. In what way is Jesus light in this world for you?
Prayer: Blessed Jesus, shine down Your light upon us, as with the light of this day. Wake us from sleep of body and soul. Bring light to the darkness of our minds and wills. Show us this day, how to go and what to do in faith and hope and love. Amen.
